Cara McGuinness is a nurse-midwife at Boston Medical Center and an Assistant Professor at Boston University. As a midwife, her career is one rooted in advocacy. Advocacy to promote physiologic birth and to protect client autonomy in the birthing process; as well as to reduce inequities in access to care and in birth outcomes. Cara is a member of the leadership committee of the Structural Competency Working Group, based in Berkeley, California. As a member of the Structural Competency Working Group, she has recently worked to integrate structural competency curriculum into nursing and medical residency education programs in California and Massachusetts. Prior to her work as a midwife, Cara worked as an anthropologist in both Guatemala and Argentina, studying systems of birth and healthcare. Cara received her master’s degree from of the University of California, San Francisco.
