CHEEA’s Interprofessional Health Equity Course is an interactive lecture and discussion series on topics in social medicine, health equity and advocacy. This year, the course will run from February-May 2025. This is a 4 part-series and consists of one 4-hour session per month on Fridays, 1-5 PM, in-person on the CHA campus.

Participants can expect 1-2 hours of (optional) preparatory and follow up material (e.g., readings, documentaries) monthly. Participants are expected to attend all sessions. Each session will consist of lectures and guided discussions, as well as periodic walking tours/site visits.

This course is grounded in the belief that healthcare professionals can play a powerful role in addressing systemic health inequities. It is also grounded in the idea that interprofessional learning can help healthcare professionals better explore and leverage their perspectives as clinician advocates.

This CHA based course is offered to trainees in any CHA post graduate training program, including pharmacy, psychology, dental, nurse practitioners/physician assistants, podiatry and residency programs in nursing, internal medicine, family medicine, and psychiatry. The course will be taught by experienced clinician- educators at CHA and beyond, and will be co-directed by Danny McCormick, MD, MPH (Department of Medicine) and Cassandra Fox, FNP-C (Zinberg Clinic).

Past Participant Feedback

“I feel more empowered and able to integrate these lessons into my patient care. I feel that I have more of a foundation to be asking the right questions and offering support to patients. I also feel that I know my resources better, and can best meet patients where they are at.”

“I loved the inter-professional relationships that were built while we learned together. Being able to share and reflect together in a safe space was helpful. I feel that now I will be able to better connect with my patients and other co-workers.”

“This really puts my patients in context that they are here as a reflection of their environment and all the inequities they are surrounded with. As someone interested in preventive medicine, it doesn't make sense to ignore a patient's environment and wait for diseases to happen to them as a consequence of the inequities. I want to continue the “one on one” discussions with my patients and my peers, read more on inequity topics of my interest now that I have a foundation, and to challenge myself to get involved in nonclinical but just as relevant work for my patients and the communities they occupy.”

“One of the biggest impacts was increased understanding of structural/systems at which I may be able to get more involved. Local leaders sharing their work was highly effective at getting a better understanding of the local landscape, increased knowledge, resources for patients, and places I can go to further my own future advocacy.”

“Advocacy, in general, is admittedly daunting, and every session did a great job of validating that while also instilling hope.”

“The ability to discuss these topics with other health professionals and see how we can each work together, made this course amazing. I loved the discussions.”
